Trolling in India: A game of hatred and abuse in the name of nationalism and culture

Trolling in India

The meaning of troll according to Cambridge university is someone who leaves an intentionally annoying message on the internet to get some attention or cause trouble, and the act of troll is called trolling. As the meaning defines its characteristics of intentionally hurting people to get attention or cause trouble is actually happening in India and on regular basis one or two people usually get trolled for their photos, videos, and comments or other activities.
Within two or three years it has been increased rapidly and also the nature and the area of trolling captured a large number of people and celebrities in its circumference. People usually don’t care to hurt sentiments of women, great personalities, famous celebrities, writers, poets and even our PM and ministers get trolled badly. The trend of abuse is spreading like a plague in India. Many of the trolls come out in the name of nationalism and our culture but actually, these acts are destroying the diversified nature of India and sometimes these acts unsuccessfully try to break the bindings between different cultures surviving and developing on Indian soil.

Time when trolling got its way to grow

It would not be hyperbolic if anyone says that everything happens in Indian society is politically motivated. Indian politics has always played its worst part in every modulation of social development. It has affected many aspects of Indian culture and society and now its turn for the internet and social media.
During the campaigns for general elections in 2014, Congress was losing its ground due to its deep rooted corruption and BJP as a nationalist party, was eager to cash this opportunity to come back in Indian govt. Then a new trend of hatred demagoguery has come into the light. They tried to demonize all the previous Congress regime, particularly Nehru and his family. It had a special taste for that. Political Parties then setup their IT departments to troll and abuse rival parties through social networking sites like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter etc. Since then, trolling has become India’s new language of disagreement.

Some cases of being trolled in India

Latest case of being offended is of Indian badminton player Jwala Gutta, who get trolled on twitter as someone has tweeted ”Is it bcoz ur mother is from China thats y u oppose MODI everytime ?”
He used some abusive and offensive language continuously in the name of pseudo nationalism.

A very flagrant issue of trolling came out when a student, Gurmeher Kaur tried to speak about peace for soldiers but in reply, she got rape threats on several online platforms again in the name of pseudo nationalism. Police and administration didn’t take any action against those offenders and even some celebrities have also tweeted some inappropriate tweets against her. And these things generalises those offend which is a poor situation. Sometimes people get up high on nationalism issue even tho they didn’t even much aware of that issue. This same thing we have witnessed in snap chat case when allegedly saying of its CEO came into the light that he did not want to promote his business in poor countries such as India and Spain. People have started to troll him and started to run a campaign against Snap chat but some people who didn’t even know about the issue came for trolling and they started posting their anger against Snapdeal in spite of Snap chat even they have nothing to do with Snap chat CEO comments.

In the name of culture

People in way of trying to save his cultural values use abusive and offensive language publicly and in fact, their action makes our culture more narrow. Priyanka Chopra recently met coincidentally with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a beautiful dress.
Soon after, Trolls had a field day slut-shaming Priyanka by posting comments on her outfit and the way she sat across the PM, slamming her for dressing “inappropriately” and “not covering her legs” and not mannered enough to “sit properly in front of elders”.
Disha Patani, Dangal fame actress Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sonam Kapoor also got abusive remarks on their dressings. People didn’t miss any chance to teach them a lesson of their culture and teaching this lesson they forget themselves their culture and attacked personally.

Recently Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami and Irfan Pathan get trolled on their wives pictures. As soon as they post their beautiful pics people didn’t waste any time to start teaching them a lesson of our culture.

Women are the soft targets

Women are the soft target for trolling in the name of culture. A well-known reporter Barkha Dutt has written in her article about being trolled.
She writes ”I have been called a whore, a ‘randi’, ‘c***”, bitch and ‘presstitute” on Twitter and other social media platforms so often that now I barely notice it. It is not unusual for me to get tweets that go like this: “Tum agar randi bhi ban jaogi, phir bhi tujhe koi nahi ch*****” (even if you become a prostitute, no one will have sex with you). My mobile number has been shared publicly on multiple online platforms urging people to send me abusive and threatening messages.’’
Indian actress Richa Chadha expressing her view about trolling to Indian women on their dressing and styles, said “I am not aware of this controversy but I feel, if she was an athlete or swimmer and if she would have had posted her picture, then also people would have shown problem with it.”
“I don’t think it is something to be discussed also and media people should also be aware of that,” said the actress.
A trend started by political parties as a weapon to destroy their rival’s image in public trolling in India has got its worst face and it didn’t leave any celebrity and not even any politician to get trolled. The Internet is a great medium for sharing memories, moments, and laughs with our friends and society but these shameful activities have been turning it into the worst experience which we have to face several times. People will have to understand that trolling someone might get him or her depressed and offended. A better law and order can minimalise this situation by sending jail to the anti social elements but we are still hoping that morality will not have to teach by laws.
